La canzone che si intitola al vischio e al vino, profani simboli della festa, ha in realtà un contenuto strettamente religioso e venne scritta da Jeremy Paul, Lesley Stuart and Keith Strachan per un musical della Piccola Fiammiferia (la famosa fiaba di Hans Christian Andersen), nel 1986. La prima interprete fu la modella Twiggy.

Venne poi ripresa da Cliff Richard che ne cambiò le parole per conferire alla canzone un significato più religioso decretandone il successo, nel 1988.
