DAN TEPFER IN DIRETTA DAL LONDON JAZZ FESTIVAL

Jeune pianiste et compositeur de talent, Dan Tepfer déploie un lyrisme et une inventivité qui lui a valu de nombreux prix. Diplômé d’astrophysique, ses études ne l’ont pas empêché de persévérer dans la musique et de commencer à se faire un nom en tant que pianiste à New York puis en duo avec le saxophoniste Lee Konitz.

Son style aventureux, entre jazz et musique classique ainsi que sa créativité sans limites l’ont élevé au rang de référence en l’art de l’improvisation. Au London Jazz Festival, il interprétera « The Goldberg Variations » de Bach, un projet de reprises entrecoupées de variations improvisées, qui tisse des liens entre les genres et les époques.

I 59 minuti che compongono l’album sono densi, impregnati da un suono scuro e da una doppia caratterizzazione dei brani: alcuni si presentano oltremodo rarefatti, costruiti con poche note distillate tra accordi e silenzi, altri sono una personale interpretazione di ambientazioni hard bop, lontanissimo però da stilemi e piste conosciute, sia di natura bop che latin jazz.

La musica proposta è allo stesso tempo antica e moderna, comunitaria e personale, meditativa e propulsiva, fuida e scorrevole. L’album necessita di molti ascolti prima di disvelare tutti i propri segreti, ricco com’è di contrasti e chiaroscuri. Ma il tempo dedicatogli è ampiamente ripagato da un fascino sottile e pervicace. Sicuramente un opera importante e uno dei dischi più significativi del 2014.

GLI APPUNTI DI STEVE

Steve Lacy a metà degli anni '50 era un giovane sassofonista newyorkese; dopo aver partecipato alla registrazione del primo album di Cecil Taylor nel 1957, Steve divenne un appassionato seguace di Thelonious Monk.

Nel 1960 fece parte del gruppo di Monk, ma Steve, giovane e timido, durante le prove prendeva appunti per meglio adeguarsi al resto della band. La fotografia ritrae appunto la calligrafia di Lacy e le massime ed i suggerimenti che Monk gli rivolgeva. Se faticate a seguire la scrittura ecco riportato il testo originale:

I RE CREMISI FILTRATI DAL DELTA SAXOPHONE

Domenica 30 novembre, alle ore 11.00, presso il Teatro Manzoni (via Manzoni, 42 – Milano), per il quarto appuntamento della sua XXX Edizione, “Aperitivo in Concerto” propone in prima assoluta “The Crimson Project”, un progetto speciale dedicato alla musica di una delle icone del progressive rock, i King Crimson.

Sul palcoscenico, eccezionalmente insieme, il Delta Saxophone Quartet, oggi uno dei più prestigiosi gruppi di sax, e il pianista Gwilym Simcock, uno dei nomi più in vista dell’attuale British Jazz, già collaboratore del batterista Bill Bruford, a lungo componente degli stessi King Crimson. Un evento che incrocia jazz, musica contemporanea e art rock.

Precedute da “Kind of Red”, composizione firmata da Simcock ispirandosi all’album Red, si ascolteranno originali riletture di brani che coprono tre decenni del composito percorso artistico dei King Crimson: “The Night Watch” e “The Great Deceiver” da Starless And Bible Black (1974), “Two Hands” da Beat (1982), “Coda: Marine 475” e “Dinosaur” da Thrak (1995).

Specializzato nell’esecuzione di pagine di musica contemporanea, il Delta Saxophone Quartet (Chris Caldwell, sax baritono, Graeme Blevins, soprano, Pete Whyman, contralto, Tim Holmes, tenore) non è nuovo a incursioni in territori affini al jazz e al rock più intelligente: nel 2007 ha registrato l’album Dedicated To You…But You Weren’t Listening, appassionante viaggio nel mondo sonoro dei Soft Machine, altro gruppo inglese che – al pari dei King Crimson - ha avuto un ruolo importante nel traghettare un’intera generazione di giovani ascoltatori dal rock verso il jazz e la musica più sperimentale.

The Crimson Project, che vede la partecipazione di Gwilym Simcock anche nelle vesti di compositore e arrangiatore e si inserisce nelle iniziative celebrative del 30° anniversario del Delta Saxophone Quartet, è una coproduzione di “Aperitivo In Concerto”, Arts Council England e Performing Society For New Music.

Registrato il 4 novembre 2014 nella Sala A del CPRF Roma

Martedì scorso ho avuto l’occasione di assistere alla registrazione del concerto di Rob Mazurek, nella sala A di via Asiago. Un pianoforte gran coda, un iPad ed una cornetta gli strumenti necessari alla performance.

Atmosfera di grande attesa, per uno dei protagonisti della scena contemporanea. Pino Saulo, come di consueto, presenta la serata, dando ennesima prova di grande preparazione e competenza musicale, raccontando in breve la variegata carriera artistica di Mazurek e facendo crescere l’interesse.

Poi Mazurek entra in scena, ed inizia il concerto. Un accordo dissonante al pianoforte squarcia il silenzio. Alcune ispirate frasi con la cornetta. Ancora un accordo alterato, ancora una frase alla cornetta. Mentre la suona, tenendo abbassato il pedale, lascia che le note emesse dall’ottone facciano risuonare le corde del piano a frequenze multiple della fondamentale.

L’effetto è quello di un duo (piano e cornetta), forse addirittura di un trio (piano, cornetta e risonanza delle corde). Improvvisazione totale, anche quando Mazurek si alterna, sempre alla cornetta, tra il microfono “trasparente” e quello “effettato”, o quando si aiuta con l’elettronica lasciando all’iPad il compito di far risuonare dei pad space-age, suonandovi sopra quando con la cornetta quando con il piano.

C’è la classica, c’è il Jazz, c’è l’elettronica nella sua musica. Un viaggio dentro se stesso, una esplorazione dei suoi più recessi sentimenti, forse influenzati o forse no dal clima romano, che chissà come deve sembrare ad un artista che viene da Chicago.

La performance finisce, Rob Mazurek ringrazia il pubblico e Pino Saulo congeda gli astanti con la sua proverbiale e rassicurante simpatia.

WHIPLASH

Girato in una ventina di giorni, Whiplash è l'esempio perfetto di come certi autori americani, padroni e abili artigiani del cinema più classico, rispettosi delle canoniche regole narrative e del viaggio dell'eroe, sappiano, proprio per la conoscenza manifatturiera di realizzazione di un film, deviare dai percorsi tracciati dal racconto tradizionale e esplorare nuove vie, sentieri mai tracciati, senza doversi allontanare mai troppo. È ciò che fa l'indie, è ciò che fa Whiplash, raggirare il classico punto di vista per offrire nuove problematiche, nuovi sguardi, nuove possibilità per il cinema.

Ed è anche ciò che rappresenta il jazz, fulcro ritmico della storia, variazione allo stesso tempo improvvisata e precisissima dal rock (se non hai talento finirai per suonare in una rockband, recita un foglio appeso in camera del protagonista): Andrew, interpretato dal giovane Miles Teller, è un batterista iscritto in una delle scuole di musica più prestigiose di New York, viene notato dal celebre ed esigente direttore d'orchestra Terence Fletcher (un formidabile J.K. Simmons).

L'unico obiettivo di Andrew è quello di diventare un grande professionista come gli idoli Bob Ellis e Buddy Rich, eliminando dalla sua strada tutto ciò che è possibile distrazione dallo studio e dalle prove, compresi l'amicizia e l'amore.

What impression of jazz studies do you think the general public will come away with from watching the film?

I'm disappointed that any viewer of the film will not see the joy of music-making that's almost always a part of large-ensemble rehearsals and performances. Musicians make music because they LOVE music.

None of that is really apparent in the film, in my opinion. Also, the misrepresentation of the Jo Jones throwing the cymbal at Charlie Parker's feet anecdote may well lead people to thinking that Jo Jones did indeed, as JK Simmons' character avers, try to decapitate Charlie Parker at that epochal jam session in Kansas City where a very real Charlie Parker attempted to play some of his double-time / new harmony improvisation and more or less flubbed it.

Papa Jo eventually tossed a cymbal towards Charlie Parker's young feet in a "gonging" motion to get him off the bandstand. Jazz masters could be tough, but the movie gets that story all wrong.

Strongly inspired by Wayne Shorter, other inspirations of saxophonist Clowes’ here include a poem by Oscar Wilde at the heart of this fine album, a writer who has been a long-time inspiration of Clowes’, the words of ‘Symphony in Yellow’ starkly contrasting natural and bucolic imagery with that of the city held captive by its river-based environment and seasonal shifts.

11 James Brandon Lewis Divine Travels OKeh

Saxophonist Lewis’ inspirational highly spiritual album includes impressive input from the Washington DC-born poet Thomas Sayers Ellis. But above all there’s a remarkable calm, ‘Tradition’ opening out for a sunny walk in the park for William Parker and Gerald Cleaver, Lewis chipping in as the rhythm swallows up all three.

10 Ginger Baker Why? Motéma Music

A quartet record of tantalising quality, the Cream legend joined by tenor saxophonist Pee Wee Ellis, Generation Band bassist Alec Dankworth tremendous here, and the percussionist Abass Dodoo yin to Baker’s yang. A record that connects with Baker’s jazz past: relatively recent as ‘Ginger Spice’ was written by trumpeter Ron Miles who Baker worked so well with on Coward of the County at the end of the 1990s; and long gone past, a partial homage to Baker’s Graham Bond Organisation days.

9 Zara McFarlane If You Knew Her Brownswood Recordings

MOBO-winning McFarlane has achieved the remarkable task of making her individuality count just two years on from her debut Until Tomorrow. That tomorrow clearly has arrived.

8 JD Allen Bloom Savant

Mostly saxophonist JD Allen’s own tunes plus Tadd Dameron’s cool ballad ‘If You Could See Me Now’, a song Sarah Vaughan made her own in the 1940s, all stillness and dewy, and Hoagy Carmichael’s ‘Stardust’ glistening and iridescent. The traditional ‘Pater Noster’ will give you chills.

7 Steve Lehman octet Mise en Abîme Pi Recordings

Five years on from Travail, Transformation and Flow, altoist Steve Lehman expands on his interests in timbre, electronics, and microtones in a free flowing fry-for-all. This album is also a formidable homage to Bud Powell with three reconstructions of the bebop pioneer’s compositions contributing to Lehman’s own interpretations. 

6 Tom Harrell Trip HighNote

Harrell paraphrases, prods and pokes at the melodies of his own compositions as he goes along, creating sparkling flurries that stir things up or settles down all gathered in an inconsequential heap expressed in a language that harks back to the glory days of hard bop, sometimes favouring witty melodic turns of phrase, or moving into edgier and harsher territory. A deep, tonally complex record, with a loose imaginative feel to it.

5 Wolfgang Muthspiel / Larry Grenadier / Brian Blade Driftwood ECM

A very open, modern, and of-the-now album amounting to the Austrian jazz guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel’s debut as a leader on ECM, Brian Blade stripping away the beat and relying on fundamental pulse for much of the drama of the tunes while Larry Grenadier is so adept at allowing the sound to ring out clearly with the immediacy the music needs, the tender arco solo at the beginning of ‘Highline’ one of the many moments of sheer pleasure.

4 Ambrose Akinmusire The Imagined Savior Is Far Easier To Paint Blue Note

Apocalyptic in mood, with a strong socially conscious side to it trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire is on extraordinary form with his longstanding quintet here extended by a string quartet plus The Vigil guitarist Charles Altura, and singers Becca Stevens, singer Theo Bleckmann and the startling Canadian singer/songwriter Cold Specks.

3 Michael Wollny trio Weltentraum ACT

A joyously exuberant album stocked with not only a plentiful supply of rock and pop covers by bands as different as The Flaming Lips and Pink but also, via the pianist’s trademark florid virtuoso approach, featuring interpretations of classical music with work by Alban Berg, Hindemith, and Varèse as well as Wollny’s own playful compositions.

2 Jason Moran All Rise: A Joyful Elegy for Fats Waller Blue Note

Certainly not a conservatoire-endorsed or ‘official’ kind of album with so much musicological respect for Fats Waller generated to construct an impossible obstacle to enjoyment. ‘Jitterbug Waltz’, tender towards the end, is where bassist Tarus Mateen comes into his own pulsing like a light caught in the rear view mirror dimming in and out of view. But it’s on this most idiosyncratic of waltzes that Moran shows his mastery of the balladic mood.

1 David Virelles Mbókò ECM

The drums are centrestage, a titanic presence and symbol at the album’s heart. The brilliant pianist Virelles, who has formidable ears and effortless-sounding advanced technique, writes within the overarching tradition of the Abakuá culture, a tradition that stretches far back to Africa and the Cross River region of Nigeria. Very much a state-of-the-art approach from a compositional point of view as well as in performance, the past melting into a vision of the future. Stephen Graham
