Tomizo Saratani (1949 - ) Bats and moon Urushi lacquered panel 34.5 x 53 cm  Considering a signe of good fortune and longvity in early China, bats appeared frequently in patterns, usually with other figures such as clouds. The same positive meaning was brought in Japan, where bats were used in both patterns and family crests.  Tomizo Saratani was born in Kyoto and has spent his life working on traditional japanese lacquer (urushi).
